It’s hard to believe that 2019 is nearly over, but with 2020 rapidly approaching, now might be a good time to start planning some interior design and home improvements.

It’s common for people to start looking at their home in a different way when a new year comes along. Just like that promise to yourself that you’ll finally become a regular gym goer or give up smoking, treating your house to a few updates is a great way to start a new year.

There are some great apps to give you a head start here, but we’ve also got a few interior design and home improvement resolutions to get you inspired.

Grab a coffee, pen and pad and start planning what you’ll do to your home in 2020.

Refresh your lighting

When was the last time you refreshed the lighting in your house? It plays a huge role in your mood and the general ambiance of the place, so 2020 might be the time to give it a bit of an update.

Start in the less obvious places, such as the bathroom. Could you inspire bath times with some unique lighting? And what about treating the hallway to an impressive chandelier?

Make small spaces look bigger with mirrors

If you’re not blessed with a huge amount of space in certain rooms, the answer could lie in adding some additional mirrors.

Mirrors are brilliant at reflecting natural light and making smaller spaces appear far bigger. From beautiful Art Deco fan style mirrors to the more contemporary framed mirrors, there’s so much to choose from.

Replace those old windows and doors

Although not exactly a minor expense, replacing windows and doors next year could make a huge difference to your home.

Providing you have the budget, new uPVC windows and doors can raise energy efficiency and vastly improve the look of your home. If yours are in bad need of replacing, why not make 2020 the year you finally do so?

Get serious about storage

Storage remains one of the most popular ways to declutter homes and improve the use of available space.

You can go ultra-simple with this in 2020 by simply adding in additional box storage and shelving, but don’t forget the vast array of integral storage that’s now available in furniture.

Therefore, if you need a new bed or settee, consider the options that offer internal, clever storage, too.

Make good those small cracks and get painting

Some home improvements are incredibly easy – you just need to get going with them.

If your home has several hairline cracks that aren’t serious but cause a bit of an eyesore, spend the new year filling them and painting. Either use the paint you already have or take the opportunity to opt for an entirely new colour.

This won’t cost much and will immediately make you feel better about your home.
